IPM Day 2014: What’s Happening

It’s the 10th anniversary of International Project Management Day. International Project Management Day is an annual celebration of project managers and the opportunity to recognize everything that project managers do to keep organizations moving forward. It was founded by Frank Saladis in 2004, and this year looks like it’s going to be the biggest yet. It’s celebrated on the first Thursday of November. From Austin to Zimbabwe there are events happening all round the world, so there is bound to be a celebration near you.

Online: Join IIL’s conference – it’s free!

The largest event happening on Thursday, November 6 is a free online conference hosted by global training firm IIL. With keynote presentations from project management legends like Dr Harold Kerzner, Terry Cooke-Davies and Frank Saladis himself it’s going to be an awesome day.

You’ll even gain PDUs for attending – essential if you hold a PMI PMP® credential.

Africa and Asia Pacific

The Australian Institute of Project Management is hosting an event focusing on working with government. Looking at big, busy and extensive projects this morning event includes three panels of speakers and addresses topics like managing complex stakeholders and upcoming opportunities in transport and infrastructure.

Both the Central and Northland Branches of PMI New Zealand have events planned. Open to friends and colleagues as well as PMI members, the Wellington event will see you learning more about patient transfer in helicopters.

Project Management South Africa has a day of activities planned in Johannesburg.

Project Management Zimbabwe is hosting a breakfast meeting in Harare.

Europe

PMI Switzerland plays host to author and one of the first female professional mountain guides in Europe, Evelyne Binsack. Evelyne will talk about the possible and the impossible and how you can achieve your goals in this evening event.

PMI Budapest, Hungarian Chapter is holding their second annual international project management conference on 6 November at the prestigious MOM Cultural Centre.

PMI Sweden has a great event in the evening explaining more about the planning and management of a major undersea cabling project.

Linz is the Austrian town playing host to a ‘Club PM’ night of networking at the highest level for PMI Austria members.

North America and USA PMI Chapter events

The PMI Durham Highlands Chapter in Ontario, Canada has an all-day program planned. The symposium kicks off at 7.30am with a packed day on the theme of fast-paced survival. After cocktail hour the evening event is a sit-down dinner with fabulous speakers.

Across the United States PMI Chapters are embracing International Project Management Day and hosting amazing events.

  • Attend a breakfast meeting with the PMI North Alabama Chapter on the role of the information provider.
  • The PMI Metro St Louis Chapter is hosting an executive reception followed by an evening of networking in the aircraft museum at Boeing.
  • The PMI Long Island Chapter is hosting an evening of cowboy and cowgirl entertainment in Merrick with a potato bar.
  • Fancy an evening of cocktails? Join the PMI Phoenix Chapter for networking and drinks in Scottsdale.
  • The PMI South Carolina Midlands Chapter has a carvery dinner planned with a presentation about the power of the profession.
  • Project managers in Arizona have the chance to hear more about legendary lessons learned at the PMI Tucson Chapter dinner meeting.

Later in November

Can’t get to an event in November? No problem. There are project management events all through the month celebrating International Project Management Day.

PM360 Asia is welcoming Frank Saladis to Singapore for their 3-day seminar. He’ll be helping them celebrate IPM Day and sharing his research into troubled projects and global project management.

The PMI UK Chapter is hosting Synergy, its popular annual project management celebration, for the fourth time this year. On the theme of what’s new, what’s old and what works, the day includes presentations from Sir Tim Smit KBE and concludes with a live band.

If you’d like to say thank you to the project managers in your organization,there are lots of simple ways that you can recognize them on this day. You could:

  • Cater breakfast
  • Take your project managers for lunch or plan an evening event
  • Host a seminar on the role of PMs in your org
  • Team up with other businesses for a joint event
  • Collaborate with a local PM meetup group to co-sponsor any of the above.

Even simply taking time out of your day to thank the project managers you know for their efforts and contribution to the business – they will really appreciate your recognition.
